Breaking Down the Barriers to Financial Empowerment for Women

In the next few years, $30 trillion of wealth will be transferred to women—an unprecedented opportunity for growth, innovation, and wealth-building. However, this massive transfer of wealth is also met with a sobering statistic: only 28% of women feel empowered to take financial action. While this number indicates progress, it also highlights a significant challenge—the other 72% of women are not fully engaging in wealth creation. But what’s standing in their way?

Through hundreds of conversations with women over the last five years, I’ve identified three critical barriers preventing women from fully stepping into their financial power:

  1. Access to Trusted Networks
  2. Access to Financial Education
  3. Access to Good Opportunities

Each of these barriers plays a pivotal role in why women, despite their growing wealth, still face obstacles when it comes to building generational wealth. Let’s explore each barrier and how we can overcome them.

1. Lack of Access to Trusted Networks

One of the most significant obstacles women face is the lack of access to trusted financial networks. According to a recent McKinsey report, women are less likely than men to have a strong financial network—one that can offer insights, guidance, and critical opportunities for wealth-building. This network gap is a major reason many women feel isolated in their financial journeys.

Building a robust, supportive network is key. Research consistently shows that women who engage with strong financial networks have greater success in achieving their wealth goals. A well-connected woman can access valuable resources, get guidance on making better financial decisions, and uncover opportunities that she may not otherwise come across. The power of a trusted network can’t be underestimated, and connecting with like-minded women is the first step in overcoming this barrier.

2. Lack of Financial Education

The second barrier is the lack of access to financial education. Despite women managing 80% of household spending and holding 40% of global wealth, a significant gap in financial literacy remains. In fact, studies show that 63% of women feel financially unprepared, especially when it comes to making investment decisions. This lack of education often leads to hesitation, which holds many women back from actively investing and building their wealth.

However, there’s good news. Financial education is within reach. The more we educate ourselves about wealth management, investments, and planning, the more we unlock the power to make confident financial decisions. Women who invest in their financial literacy are better equipped to manage their wealth, mitigate risks, and achieve long-term financial goals. Whether you’re learning about stocks, real estate, or venture capital, educating yourself is the key to taking control of your financial future.

What steps are you taking to improve your financial knowledge and confidence?

3. Lack of Access to Good Opportunities

Finally, access to good opportunities is a critical barrier. Many women still believe that wealth-building opportunities are out of reach—reserved for a select few, or too complicated to navigate. However, this belief couldn’t be further from the truth. In the past five years alone, women’s private equity investments have grown by 70%, and studies show that women-led businesses are outperforming their male counterparts by 63% in terms of returns.

Opportunities are everywhere. Whether it’s through entrepreneurship, real estate, or investing in emerging markets, there are countless avenues for wealth creation. High-net-worth women are in an ideal position to leverage both capital and influence to make a lasting impact—not only on their own financial futures but on the economy at large. The key is recognizing these opportunities and having the tools, knowledge, and confidence to take action.
