I’ve been talking a lot about mediocrity lately. How it shows up in the financial world as the safe, familiar, and algorithmic. How it shapes the conversations we have about money—and the ones we don’t.
But let’s get honest: mediocrity isn’t just a system “out there.” It’s a mindset that sneaks in when we’re tired, uncertain, or just too busy to question the status quo.
Hyper mediocrity is the default—because it’s easy. It’s comfortable. And it doesn’t ask us to get too close to what we really want.
But here’s the truth: mediocrity might feel safe, but it’s also where possibility goes to die. It’s a ceiling we build over our own potential.
If you’re reading this, I know you’re not here to play small. So let’s talk about how to break free.
Breaking Free: Three Practical Shifts
1️⃣ Revisit Your Money Story
We often treat money like it’s a static math problem—assets, liabilities, spreadsheets. But money is a story. And that story shapes the risks we take, the investments we make, and the dreams we’re willing to back.
Start by asking:
- Whose values built the wealth you’re managing?
- What assumptions are you carrying about what’s “safe” or “acceptable”?
- Where did those stories come from?
The answers might surprise you. But they’re the first step in shifting from inherited patterns to intentional choices.
2️⃣ Create Your Own Benchmarks
Hyper mediocrity loves the comfort of someone else’s standards. The industry average. The “normal” portfolio. But real wealth isn’t one-size-fits-all. It’s personal.
Ditch the default benchmarks and ask:
- What does meaningful growth look like to me right now?
- Where am I measuring myself against someone else’s playbook—and how does that feel?
3️⃣ Cultivate Your Capacity for Discomfort
Challenging mediocrity isn’t easy. It requires us to tolerate the discomfort of not having all the answers, of moving against the grain.
But this is where the magic happens.
- Practice saying “no” to the safe option that doesn’t light you up.
- Say “yes” to the bold move that feels right—even if it’s not the norm.
- Surround yourself with people who aren’t afraid to think differently.
Why It Matters
Breaking free from hyper mediocrity depends on reclaiming agency over your financial life. It looks like making sure that your money isn’t just a reflection of what’s possible in the market, but of what’s possible in you.
This is what true wealth is: alignment, agency, and the freedom to live out your own definition of success.
