Brooklyn, it was a homecoming.
The first place I landed in New York was Fort Greene. It was 2002, I would find myself sharing a futon with my best friend Rina Bliss for 3 months, and I was in awe of the new city I decided to call home. Fort Greene was a beautiful landing.
Having our Brooklyn Salon last night, just blocks away from where I used to live, felt like a full circle.
I love what our host Uzma Hasan said last night:
“Money gives you agency – it can not only allow you to have the life that you’ve always dreamed of, but it can allow you to create a better world with intention.”
Brooklyn showed up. Here’s what they shared:
“I woke up one day and something in my stomach told me you need to own your time. You can only be so happy for so long when your gut is going in the other way of your compass. My compass was off for a long time. I just didn’t have the agency to take that decision – but now I do.”
“When I talk to women about money, no one shares numbers. And that to me is really weird. How will I know if buying a place in Atlanta is a good deal if you don’t tell me your mortgage?”
“I wish I thought about it more as an investment. I actually would have done things differently. I poured so much into the first house – I would have bought five houses and not done that.”
In the room were founders, investors, builders, executives, and creatives. We gathered to stand in our greatness and curiosity, and as a result we illuminated optionality, possibilities and normalized this non-linear path called life.
Thank you, Brooklyn. We’re taking that energy to May 14th.
Tonight, we take over Chief NYC.
